We have much to be thankful for over the past year, for the incredible impact on the Pittsburgh community has only been made possible thanks to our amazing food donors, nonprofit partners, funders, supporters, and volunteers.

Last year, we had cumulatively rescued and redistributed 17.2 million pounds of food –  surplus food, perfectly GOOD food – that would have gone to waste. In 2022, our impact has now reached 21.4 million pounds since 2015, with 4.2 million pounds being rescued this year alone.

Home Delivery Program

This holiday season marks the year-and-a-half anniversary of our Home Delivery program. As of this fall, the program has successfully delivered 100,000 meals to Pittsburgh neighbors experiencing food insecurity. From a place of thoughtful reflection, we’d like to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt thank you to our volunteers.

Since its launch in June of 2021, the Home Delivery program has grown in partners, households, and understanding. Currently, we partner with 14 nonprofits to distribute fresh food to nearly 200 households every month. As we wrap up 2022, we’re so proud to celebrate creating over 100,000 meals to date. We know that this work never could have reached this milestone without the dedication, generosity and kindness shown by our incredible volunteers.

“I claimed a Home Delivery nearby and ended up delivering food to three homes in my neighborhood. My neighbors, so close to me, were dealing with food insecurity. It wasn’t like you always think, that hunger is something that affects people far away. Hunger is right here in MY neighborhood. That’s just not right.”

In most food settings, “zero waste” tends to mean ~10% waste. But at 412 Food Rescue’s Good Food Project in Millvale, our waste is merely 0.023%.

The Good Food Project was born as a solution to effectively utilize niche, unplanned, or odd quantities of food that otherwise would struggle to be distributed through normal food rescue channels.

While most chefs plan their ingredients around their menus, Chef Greg Austin designs his meals based on the donated ingredients on hand. Every week, he turns 2,500 pounds of donated food into 1,200 prepared meals for community members experiencing food insecurity.
