As the excitement of spring training for the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 2024 Grapefruit League season builds, we at 412 Food Rescue are thrilled that Andrew McCutchen has been signed by the Pirates for another year! The Pirates star is entering the 2024 season just one home run shy of 300 in his career but not short of much deserved recognition for his unwavering dedication to our beloved City of Steel. McCutchen has recently been honored as the 2023 Pittsburgher of the Year by Pittsburgh Magazine, a tribute that we emphatically support.
McCutchen’s impact extends far beyond the realm of sports. At just 37 years old, he has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for the Pittsburgh community. Alongside his wife Maria, Cutch has been a steadfast supporter of 412 Food Rescue since the beginning, with a recent major gift marking yet another significant milestone in their commitment to combating food waste and hunger in Pittsburgh and beyond.
His involvement with 412 Food Rescue traces back to 2015, when he first became acquainted with our mission to feed people, not landfills. Since then, Andrew and Maria have played integral roles in various initiatives, from donating a truck for bulk food rescues, to volunteering, to making appearances in support of our cause and the community. Their contributions have been instrumental, particularly during the pandemic-induced crisis.
As Cutch prepares for another season of baseball, 412 Food Rescue gears up for the next chapter (with a new CEO announcement coming soon!)—made possible not only by major players like Andrew but also by the collective support of over 30,000 individuals who value equitable access to healthy foods and environmental stewardship. Together, we have diverted more than 30.7 million pounds of food bound for the waste stream in Western Pennsylvania, the equivalent of 25.5 million meals, mitigating 54.5 million pounds of CO2 emissions in the process.
