There’s a lot of uncertainty around changes to education, environmental, and social programs – but at 412 Food Rescue, our mission to expand access to food and nutrition remains imperative. It’s a powerful reminder of why grassroots efforts and community-driven initiatives, like food recovery, remain vital to the health of our region.
We all can’t do it all – but there are things we can do to support our community.
Why starting in your community is effective:
Direct impact: When you address local issues, you can see the immediate results of your efforts, building momentum and motivation as your actions create tangible change for your neighbors.
Building relationships: Engaging with your community allows you to build strong connections with others, understand what other initiatives exist that could help each other, discover other local needs, and create a network of support for change.
Understanding local needs: You already have a leg up understanding what you and your neighbors need. Being actively present allows you to gain a deeper understanding of the specific challenges and priorities within your community, enabling you to create targeted and effective solutions. When we learn directly from our smaller communities what challenges it is they’re facing, we’re able to show up for them in the ways that truly impact change.
Empowerment: Taking action in your own community can foster a sense of ownership and agency, encouraging others to participate and contribute.
How to create change in your community:
Volunteer with local organizations: Donate your time to causes that resonate with you, whether it’s at a food pantry, homeless shelter, or environmental group.
412 Food Rescue is a great option because it addresses multiple things at once:
- Increase food access in food deserts
- Address food insecurity among community members who may or may not qualify for SNAP benefits and assistance
- Feed minority populations at women’s shelters, safe houses, and LGBTQ+ centers
- Provide meals to school-aged children
- Mitigate harmful effects of food waste in landfills by preventing greenhouse gas emissions
