In a display of community spirit and solidarity, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Giant Eagle teamed up to support combating food insecurity in Pittsburgh. Through their combined efforts and generosity, they’re not only scoring goals on the ice but also making a significant impact off the rink.
During the 2023-2024 season, for every save made by a Penguins goalie at home games, Giant Eagle pledged to donate $10 to 412 Food Rescue.
This “Season Saves” initiative has been a testament to the Penguins’ commitment to their community beyond the hockey arena, as well as Giant Eagle’s continued dedication to supporting food access across Pittsburgh.
Taking their support a step further, teams from the Pittsburgh Penguins and Giant Eagle rolled up their sleeves and joined 412 Food Rescue for a day of volunteering on April 2, 2024. Approximately 15 volunteers from both organizations lent a helping hand at 412 Food Rescue’s Grocery Bagging Program, packaging a whopping 800 pounds of food that would be distributed to housing authority sites across the city.
On the same day, Giant Eagle’s Greenfield location served as the food donor for a food rescue with Iceburgh, the Penguins’ beloved mascot, and Maureen Busis, a dedicated volunteer with 412 Food Rescue.
Iceburgh then accompanied the team to North Aiken Commons, a nonprofit partner, where they delivered the rescued food, interacted with residents, and shared a delightful lunch with students from The Neighborhood Academy.
The culmination of the Season Saves campaign was marked by a poignant moment on April 13, as Giant Eagle presented a check totaling $12,500 to 412 Food Rescue. This generous contribution, fueled by the collective efforts of Penguins fans and Giant Eagle, underscores the power of community collaboration in addressing food insecurity.
We’re immensely grateful for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Giant Eagle’s partnership with 412 Food Rescue; it’s evident that when organizations come together for a common cause, remarkable things can happen.
Join the Penguins and Giant Eagle in their mission to combat hunger in Pittsburgh by supporting 412 Food Rescue. Together, we can help to create a brighter future for all of our neighbors in Pittsburgh.
